Crocheted Pony Tail Holder Tutorial ~ Ruffly Scrunchie Perfect for Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Gifts

Crochet Hair Scrunchie pattern designed to send in an Operation Christmas Child shoebox.

Years ago my youngest daughter wanted a football themed birthday party--she was turning 8 I think.  So we invited a couple of her friends to spend the night and I asked each to pick their favorite football team.  I crocheted team colored items like little footballs and pony tail holders for each girl (all the patterns I invented for myself--this was pre-internet).  This year I was able to get some free hair bands at Rite Aid for my Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes and I decided to pull out those old ruffled scrunchies and see how I made them to add color to these otherwise boring bands. And if the little girl doesn't have enough hair for a pony tail
she can wear it as a bracelet.

These are very easy and quick to make.  They can be made from scrap yarn  with each row a different color or all the rows the same color.  The original ones were made using sport weight yarn but all I had on hand was worsted weight to make for my shoe boxes so I put less stitches in as I thought they would be too thick to work.  I will include directions for both.

Simple Crocheted Ruffled Pony Tail Holders Instructions

Supplies:  scrap yarn, crochet hook (size comfortable for weight of yarn), hair band
  • sl st yarn around band, ch 1
  • Rnd 1:  sc around until band is covered -- it will vary by weight of yarn; join w/sl st, ch 2 (do not turn)
  • Rnd 2:  for worsted weight yarn work two double crochets in each sc; for sportweight/baby yarn alternate between two dc in sc and 3 dc in next sc [the great thing is after you make one you can adjust it for how full you like them to be--put more or less dc in each]; join w/sl st in top of ch 2; ch 1 (do not turn)
  • Rnd 3:  sc, ch 3 in each st around, join with sl st, finish off
  • Sew in ends.
sl st - Slip Stitch
st - stitch
ch - chain
sc - single crochet
dc - double crochet
rnd - round

These are so cute, I think I should re-learn to crochet. It's been a long time.
