I try to put a scarf, hat or gloves in each shoebox I send thru Operation Christmas Child. Scarves roll up nice and small to tuck inside. I keep my eye open on after Christmas Clearance sales of fleece blankets as they are much cheaper than buying the fabric by the yard--and easier in my area to purchase. They are usually 30" wide which can make for a nice number of children's scarves. Even adult scarves
can be made and the per scarf price is extremely low when you pay $1.50 or $2.00 per blanket. As you can see in the picture. the blankets I purchased this year happened to be fringed already on the ends which saved me a step. Simple no-sew instructions are below.
Supplies:
- fleece fabric or blankets
- scissors
- yard stick
Instructions:
- Cut fabric lengthwise: 5 to 6" across for child's and 7 - 8" for adults (I usually figure by how wide my piece of fabric is and divide it evenly). Approximate Length: young child - 35", school age child - 45", teen/adult 55". The fabric should stretch across the short end of the scarf, not the long direction. I have read a good length for a scarf is the height of the child wearing it.
- Fringe bottom of scarf by cutting approximately 4 to 6 inches about every 1". You can decide if you want it thinner, thicker, longer or shorter or make them all different. You can also tie knots in them, but when I did on mine it didn't look right but I have seen them done and have liked them.

Love the scarves! Fleece is such a fun soft texture to include in shoeboxes :)
I agree--so cuddly. I have a bunch of these blankets and have been thinking of other goodies to make other than scarves and hats--will be so fun. Thanks for stopping by.
