Upcycling Greeting Cards Into Needle Books for Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box Gifts

Upcycled greeting card Needle Book tutorial. Made for an Operation Christmas Child shoebox.

I am always trying to think of ways to upcycle cards as they are so sturdy and lovely.  Here is my latest:  needle books for Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes.  I want to include small sewing kits in several of my 10 to 14 year old girl shoeboxes this year.  My mom can no longer sew and I have a box of her sewing supplies.  I decided to check it out and see if there were any new items I could use in my sewing kits.  I found some pins and needles and to make a simple needle book I used felt and a greeting card.  These will be included along with thread, scissors
and other sewing goodies.

How to:
  • Remove the back of the card.
  • Fold up bottom about 3/8" to 1/2"
  • Fold top down so it just tucks inside like a matchbook.
  • Cut a piece of felt just slightly smaller than the inside of the book.
  • Push the felt way down under the bottom fold and staple being sure to catch it, but leaving enough room for the top to fold under.
  • Insert pins & needles.
  • Fold top over.
  • Tip:  Decide which way is best for the card to be folded.  Some cards are best folded upside down--so the bottom of the card is what is tucking inside the flap.

Thanks, Kristy! I remember missionaries to Chad, Africa telling us how just a card can brighten the bleakness of their homes and I try to think of ways to include them in my shoe boxes.

I am just using felt but I bet I can adapt it real easily and this is much prettier.

It's fun to get ideas to adapt our own creations into even new projects, Gram Cheryl. That's what keeps the shoe boxes so unique.

This is a great idea! I have made pin "cards' using felt and just dealt with getting pricked. This is brilliant, would stop the pain!

I love this! How clever and pretty! Reminds me of the old fashioned needle packages that aren't made anymore. Thank you so much for sharing with us at Creative Craft Challenge!

Such a cute idea...I wish I had not just tossed a stack of pretty cards as I was cleaning...

I'm so glad I found this! I've been looking for ways to include pins & needles in my shoeboxes. I added another (shorter) layer of felt, one for pins, and the other for needles and safety pins. Thank you!
